Best Running Shoes for Half Marathon Training in Australia (2026): New Balance vs ASICS Men's

Best Running Shoes for Half Marathon Training in Australia (2026): New Balance vs ASICS Men's

A half marathon is 21.1 km of repeated impact, and most of the work happens long before race day. Over a 10 to 12 week build, your shoes take hundreds of kilometres of long runs, tempo sessions and easy recovery jogs. Pick the wrong pair and the problems usually show up in week six: sore shins, tight calves, black toenails, or a worn-out midsole you didn't notice.

Spring is when many Australian runners start building for the summer and autumn events. The Melbourne Marathon Festival is on 11 October 2026, the first Hobsons Bay Half Marathon & 10K in Altona is on 8 November, and the 2XU Wellness Run has a 21.1 km option on 22 November. You can check dates on the O2 Events calendar and the Hobsons Bay event listing. This guide compares New Balance and ASICS men's shoes for half marathon training, using what LUZActive actually has in stock in October 2026.

Prices are landed AUD, GST and duties included under our Landed Price Guarantee. Because the same model is often listed in several colourways at different prices, we show the range in stock. LUZActive is an independent multi-brand retailer, not an official partner or affiliate of New Balance or ASICS.

Quick Verdict

For half marathon training, New Balance is the stronger pick in our men's range right now: the Fresh Foam X 880 v15 for daily kilometres, the 860 v15 for support, the 1080 v15 for long-run cushioning and the FuelCell Rebel v5 for faster sessions. ASICS in our men's range is currently retro-styled Gel models like the Cumulus 16 and Kayano 14, which are comfortable for walking and easy runs but are not built for a training block.

How to Choose a Shoe for Half Marathon Training

Match the shoe to the job, not the brand

A half marathon sits between a 10K and a full marathon. Weekly volume is high enough that cushioning and comfort matter, but you still want a shoe that doesn't feel sluggish on a quicker session. Most runners are best served by one reliable daily trainer, then a second shoe for either more cushion or more speed. Running-shoe education sources generally recommend choosing shoes for your terrain and mileage and rotating pairs once mileage climbs, for example Run to the Finish's guide to choosing running shoes.

Support or neutral?

If your ankles roll inward as you tire or you've been told you overpronate, look at a stability trainer such as the New Balance 860 v15. If you're neutral, the 880 v15 or 1080 v15 is the better starting point. A gait assessment at a local running store is the quickest way to find out which you are. This is general guidance, not medical advice. If you have persistent pain, see a physio or podiatrist.

Cushioning for the second half of the run

Form tends to fall apart late in a long run, which is why a softer, more protective shoe makes sense for your long runs even if you plan to race in something lighter. The 1080 v15 is the plushest option in our men's range.

How long do half marathon training shoes last?

Many running sources put midsole life at roughly 300 to 500 miles (about 480 to 800 km), depending on your weight, running surface and the foam. At 40 km a week, that's around three to five months, so check your pair's mileage before a build starts.

The Three-Shoe Rotation for a Half Marathon Block

Rotating pairs lets each pair decompress and dry between runs, and different shoes suit different sessions. One Brooks half marathon pacer, speaking in a Q&A on shoe rotation from HBF, makes the same point and says he likes to race in shoes that have done fewer than about 80 km. A simple rotation for most runners:

  • Daily trainer (most runs): New Balance 880 v15.
  • Long-run cushion: New Balance 1080 v15, or a plush On Cloudmonster 3 ($266–$360).
  • Speed day: New Balance FuelCell Rebel v5 for tempo and interval sessions.

On a tighter budget, one 880 v15 and one cheaper second shoe is still a big step up from running everything in a single pair.

Break-In and Race-Week Timeline

  • 12 weeks out: buy your daily trainer and start logging its kilometres.
  • 8 to 10 weeks out: add a second shoe for long runs or speed work.
  • 4 weeks out: choose your race shoe and do at least two long runs in it.
  • Race week: don't debut anything new, including shoes, socks and laces. Wear what you've trained in.

Even if the Melbourne Marathon Festival is days away, the same rule applies: it's too late to break in a brand-new pair, so race in what's already carried you through training.

Wide Feet and Sizing for Long Runs

Feet swell during long runs, and a shoe that feels fine in the shop can be tight by kilometre 15. Many running retailers suggest leaving about a thumb's width of space beyond your longest toe, and trying shoes on in the afternoon when feet are at their largest. New Balance has the broadest width range, and the 880 v15 and 860 v15 are available in standard, 2E and 4E in our men's range. Check our size guides before you order: New Balance Men's and ASICS Men's.

Where ASICS Fits Right Now

The ASICS Gel Cumulus 16 ($309) and Gel Kayano 14 ($309–$343) are re-releases of classic ASICS running models. They're soft and comfortable for walking, recovery days and short easy runs, but they use older midsole technology than current performance foams, so they're not the shoe we'd choose for 40 km weeks. If you want ASICS-style structure, look at the New Balance 860 v15, the closest in-stock support shoe. Other Half Marathon Options in Stock

If neither brand suits you, the Nike Pegasus 42 ($283) is a balanced all-rounder and the On Cloudmonster 3 ($266–$360) is a plush long-run option. See our best running shoes for men in Australia 2026 guide, the New Balance vs On Running men's comparison and the On Running vs Nike guide.

Common Half Marathon Shoe Mistakes

  • Racing in brand-new shoes. Hot spots and blisters show up late. Do at least two long runs in your race shoes.
  • Running every session in one worn pair. Check mileage before the build starts.
  • Buying on style alone. A retro sneaker looks great but isn't built for a training block.
  • Going too narrow. Toe numbness late in a run usually means you need more width, not a bigger size.
  • Choosing a race-day shoe without testing it. Fast shoes can feel unstable if you haven't trained in them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best shoes for half marathon training in Australia?

In our men's range, the New Balance Fresh Foam X 880 v15 is the best daily trainer, the 1080 v15 is the plushest for long runs, and the FuelCell Rebel v5 suits speed work. The Nike Pegasus 42 and On Cloudmonster 3 are good alternatives.

New Balance or ASICS for a half marathon?

In our current men's stock, New Balance, because its range includes current performance trainers. Our ASICS men's models are retro-styled and better suited to walking and easy runs.

Can I run a half marathon in my daily trainer?

Yes, many runners do. A lighter speed shoe can feel quicker, but only race in it if you've done long runs in it first.

How many pairs of shoes do I need for half marathon training?

Two is a sensible minimum for most runners: a daily trainer plus either a cushioned long-run shoe or a faster shoe. Three suits higher mileage.

How many kilometres do running shoes last?

Roughly 480 to 800 km (300 to 500 miles) for many daily trainers, depending on weight, surface and the shoe.

Should I size up for a half marathon?

Not necessarily, but leave about a thumb's width in front of your longest toe and choose a wide fit if your forefoot feels tight. Feet swell on long runs.

Is it too late to buy new shoes before a race?

If your race is within about two weeks, stay with the pair you've trained in. A new pair needs at least a couple of long runs to prove itself.

Do the prices include GST and duties?

Yes. Every price includes GST and duties under our Landed Price Guarantee.
